About the Author

Writing from the interior, where feeling often arrives before language.

“Words are a pretext; what draws people is the bond between hearts.” – Rumi

Gretchen Astro Turner is a writer of short fiction, reflective prose, and sacred poetry whose work explores the inner landscapes where memory, imagination, and meaning quietly meet. She subtly reveals the inner weather of people who live intensely, feel deeply, and observe themselves as much as they experience the world. Her prose and poetry lingers in emotional in-between spaces, shaped by distance, longing, and transformation, yet always threaded with beauty, humor, and human grace. Her lyrical, vivid writing never settles into a single emotional register for too long.

Gretchen’s writing can feel playful on the surface, yet edged with something unsettling that silently deepens as the ending approaches. Her stories trust the reader to sit with ambiguity and symbolic resonance. The semiotics, the nested asides, the elasticity of tone, funny one moment, brutal or tender the next, convey that people are not steady arcs; they are accumulations of memory, sensation, desire, obsession, love, regret, and self-mythology.

Gretchen writes with a level of self-awareness turned up to 11. Her vulnerable, raw, and authentic storytelling is one of a kind, with a playfulness and personalism that touches some deep and universal place in the human heart. She speaks of addiction as one who fought her way out of its trenches without letting it steal her spark of irreverent zest and joie de vivre.

Rather than rushing toward resolution, Gretchen’s writing creates room for wonder. These pieces invite readers to pause, breathe, and notice the small inner shifts that gently shape how we move through the world. Even in uncertainty, her work affirms connection between people, between moments, and between who we are and who we are becoming.

But I Digretch, her debut collection, brings together stories that speak softly yet radiate presence. They welcome readers to recognize themselves not only in silence and contradiction, but also in resilience, tenderness, and hope, revealing how even the most fleeting moments can hold light.

Gretchen Astro Turner holds a Master of Arts in the Teaching of English Language Arts from Columbia University (4.0 GPA); she likes to joke that her other advanced degree is from Psychedelic State. She is bisexual (or “ambisextrous,” as she playfully coins), androgynous, an athlete (played basketball for Columbia University), a drummer, a sadhaka, an identical twin, and, in her own words, she’s “in love with furry buddies.”

In addition to But I Digretch, Gretchen is currently at work on a forthcoming collection of transcendental surrealist love poetry that leans even more fully into wonder, devotion, our spiritual homecoming, and the multi-dimensions of the human heart.

Our History

More Than Just Stories

These pieces are not written to instruct or hurry toward tidy conclusions. They exist to linger, to accompany moments shaped by memory, distance, and quiet transformation. Each work invites stillness, offering the reader a space to pause, to breathe, and to notice what gently stirs beneath the surface.

The writing moves through emotional interiors: what remains after something ends, what is almost said but left glowing in the air, what continues long after a moment has passed. Rather than offering answers, the work opens doorways, trusting readers to meet each piece with their own inner knowing and lived experience.

Across stories, reflections, and fragments, attention is given not only to silence and subtlety, but also to resilience, beauty, and the small sparks that carry us forward. These are pieces that favor presence over explanation, atmosphere over certainty, and connection over closure. They invite readers not to rush, but to recognize themselves gently, honestly, and to allow meaning to emerge in its own hallowed time.

Gretchen Astro wishes to thank Daniel, Michelle, Jerome, and Doris for their instrumental dreamwork-teamwork.
